Discrimination and Hate Speech as a Threat to Democracy
She emphasizes: Discrimination is a crime prosecuted ex officio; the public prosecutor’s office and the courts must investigate every incident—this is the only way to uncover instances of discrimination and protect those affected.
Particularly alarming: The VMR is recording an increase in verbal abuse directed at individuals in public office or government agencies. This is a trend that the Council of Europe also attributes to a growing loss of trust in times of crisis.
If such attacks are fueled by political calculations, they harm not only individuals but also our rule of law and our democracy as a whole.
Anyone who observes or personally experiences human rights violations can report them to the VMR.
