National human rights institutions
In 1993, the United Nations (UN) encouraged all member states to establish National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs). This was based on the so-called Paris Principles. They regulate the criteria for the establishment of National Human Rights Institutions and ensure their independence from the government.
NHRIs are the link between the authorities, politics and civil society when it comes to implementing human rights. The VHR is a member of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI). It has applied for membership of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
