Yesterday, Anja Klug and Fiona Mubi from the UNHCR Office for Switzerland and Liechtenstein presented their report on Liechtenstein's asylum system to the general public in Balzers.

Afterwards, moderator Petra Julia Matt joined Anja Klug, APA Head of Office Markus Biedermann, FHL President Hansjörg Büchel, Christian Blank from the Association for Human Rights in Liechtenstein (VMR) and two representatives of the refugee community on the podium to discuss the current situation and prospects for refugee protection in Liechtenstein. Greetings and closing remarks were given by Deputy Prime Minister Sabine Monauni and Government Councillor Hubert Buechel.

The UNHCR report is the first comprehensive analysis of Liechtenstein's asylum system. It highlights Liechtenstein's achievements in terms of refugee protection, but also highlights potential for optimization. In particular, the UNHCR recommends

  • Making the asylum procedure more efficient,
  • tackle integration challenges (such as by abolishing the wage cession and the travel ban,
  • and introducing a positive protection status instead of temporary admission.

More information can be found in the UNHCR press release.
