Plain language in government
In doing so, the government is sending out a strong signal in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD, Art. 9 & 21). Information must be accessible to everyone - including people with learning difficulties, mental impairments or limited reading ability.
Easy language means:
✅ short sentences
✅ simple words, no foreign words
✅ many explanations
➡️ So content can be better understood by everyone.
This is an important step towards breaking down barriers to accessing political information. At the same time, it must not stop at the initial content: Other areas - administration, justice, education, health - also need comprehensible information in plain language. Election documents, for example, are currently only available in German and urgently need to be adapted to the requirements of the UN CRPD.
👉 Inclusion means that every person can actively participate in social and political life, regardless of their abilities. Easy-to-read language is a key tool for this.
I would like to warmly praise the government of the Principality of Liechtenstein for this start - and extend a clear invitation to continue on this path.
