Does a time-limited solution reduce suffering and stigma?

As part of the “Brennpunkt Demokratie” event series, a public discussion moderated by Nils Vogt on the issue of abortion time limits took place on May 17, 2026, at the stein egerta - bildet debate park in Schaan. The discussion centered on the question: Does an abortion time limit reduce suffering and stigmatization?

Following an introductory presentation by Gabriella Alvarez-Hummel, representatives from politics and civil society discussed reproductive rights, social responsibility, and the legal framework surrounding abortion. Lisa von Reden participated in the discussion on behalf of the Liechtenstein Human Rights Association (VMR).

From a human rights perspective, the position on the time-limit solution is clear: the right to bodily autonomy and access to medical care are among the most fundamental human rights. International human rights standards emphasize that those affected must be able to make self-determined decisions—without discrimination, stigmatization, or unnecessary barriers.
Restrictive regulations can lead to those affected suffering additional psychological, social, or health-related burdens. A time-limit solution can help reduce suffering, break down stigma, and create legal clarity. At the same time, it ensures that decisions are made within a clearly defined legal framework.

The Association for Human Rights welcomes open social dialogue on complex ethical and legal issues. Democratic debates that bring different perspectives to light and incorporate human rights standards are an essential component of a pluralistic society.
