International Day against Homo-, Bi-, Inter- and Transphobia
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT for short) has been celebrated annually on May 17 since 2005 by homosexual, later also bisexual, trans and intersex people as a day of action to draw attention to discrimination and punishment of people through actions, media attention and lobbying. Since 2005, homosexuals, and later also bisexuals, transgender and intersex people, have celebrated this day of action on May 17 to draw attention to the discrimination and punishment of people who deviate from heteronormativity in their sexual orientation, their gender identity or their bodies through campaigns, media attention and lobbying. The date was chosen to commemorate May 17, 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to remove homosexuality from its diagnostic code for diseases. Transgender was only removed as a disease by the WHO in 2018 with the publication of ICD-11.
