The Rainbow Map 2026 is now online
In 2026, Liechtenstein ranks 31st out of 49 European countries with a score of 31%. This marks a one-place improvement for Liechtenstein compared to the previous year. According to ILGA-Europe, this slight improvement is due in particular to the systematic work of the National Human Rights Institution on equality issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics.
The Rainbow Map assesses the legal and political framework for LGBTIQ+ people in Europe based on clear criteria, including equality, protection against discrimination, family rights, hate crimes, and legal recognition. Across Europe, Spain tops the ranking for the first time in 2026, while Liechtenstein remains in the lower middle of the pack.
What does this mean for Liechtenstein?
The introduction of marriage equality was an important step. At the same time, the ranking clearly shows that there is still room for improvement, particularly when it comes to comprehensive protection against discrimination, legal recognition, and sustainable equality policies.
The Rainbow Map website features the full assessment for Liechtenstein as well as the criteria used for the evaluation.
